when I import an .obj and do nothing with it except rename a few parts, then re-export it, the file becomes much larger than the original .obj.

Could you attach a file that demonstrates the problem (that is, a small OBJ file that becomes bigger when imported and exported)? Thanks!

I just tried to attach a file but got an error that said the file must be no larger than 256K and the files that I have are about 4 MB or larger. I'm not sure if I still have the original one that I talked about. I had to delete some files to make room on my hard drive.

Have you seen this post in the Friendlyskies forum? (I tell how I made the .obj objects, etc.) http://www.friendlyskies.net/aoiforum/viewtopic.php?pid=13133#p13133

If you can't attach the file here, could you email it to me? I have some ideas for how to produce smaller OBJ files, but I don't know if they would help your particular model, and the forum discussion didn't give enough information for me to tell.
