There are some parts of the aoetools that don't really have to do with
the Linux kernel driver for AoE. The aoeping program, for example, is
a purely userland utility. It should work on a 2.4 system, although I
haven't tried it yet.

There are no plans to make the kernel-dependent parts compatible with
the 2.4 driver. There are a few reasons ...
* The 2.6 driver is in the Linux kernel proper, so there's a need
for supporting software distributed in a separate package. The
2.4 driver is only available as a third-party driver outside of
the 2.4 kernel itself. That third-party distribution is self
That is, the kernel-related parts of aoetools aren't needed by 2.4
users, and the non-kernel-related parts are already usable by 2.4
* Distros will be moving away from 2.4 as new ones continue to use
2.6 and old ones wane in popularity. It keeps the aoetools simple
to support only one kernel interface.

I've been quite pleased with the stability of 2.6. It used to be that
2.4 had the potential to be more stable than 2.6, but now there's a
stable 2.6 kernel release (the four-numbered versions).
