I don't know if anybody's still interested, I seem to be 2 years late, but I just got a sporster voicemodem and picked up answerd to make it my answering machine. I've hacked it a bit so that it runs out of init, and speaks to my rather buggy modem.
I also added features where you can call in and check your voice messages via a phone call, and added an external way to play back messages at home (I use my x-10 remote for this)
