However, I would support requiring an endian attribute, but limiting its allowed value to "little". This accomplishes 2 things. First, it removes any ambiguity over how the data were stored. Second, by refusing to validate other endian values, it forces the person writing the software to use the proper format (or at least to make them aware that they are violating the standard and producing corrupt files when saying data are little-endian but storing big-endian).
