Read and respond to this message at: https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=2005699 By: trgilmore it is diffucult to view numbers as there is a conversion from the numerical representation (ieee) vs the ASCII that you can see. That is my point. The representation should be the SAME as the storage, then the person creating the record can control what is there: what you see is what you get. To try this look at the internal representation of the number 50. It is stored as a number other that 50 times a binary exponent of 32 or 64. The number can be very close to a 50, but it cannot be 50. If you want a 50, the number should be represented as a decimal witha power of 10 exponent, but this is not the standard computer notation. ORACLE in the database stores number as character with up to 38 characters in a decimal system, so there is no tranformation of the number. Characters do not necessarily take more room for storage as 8 characters may not use more space than a 64bit ieee number. There should certainly be a descriptor in the standard to identify the shape of a data block! ______________________________________________________________________ You are receiving this email because you elected to monitor this forum.
