When representing numbers of characters doesn't this pose an issue with rounding
errors?  This is an issue in Java I/O where you have to take care when printing
numbers to be read back in such that the bit pattern will be the same when the
string is converted back into a float.

There are really two issues here:
1. the size of the output (strings are bigger)
2. problems with rounding

Any thoughts?
