Setting up Windows XP for 0 Backup

Configuring Windows XP to receive the backup from 0 Backup is an easy task. The exact steps may depend on your configuration and the specific edition of Windows XP that your are using, but the following steps will help you.

1.-Find the IP address of your computer

You will need the IP address of your computer to configure 0 Backup. There are many ways to gather such information. For example, open a command line by clicking on Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command prompt:

Then, type ipconfig and write down the shown IP address (in our example, 192.168.0.61):

Right-click on the place where you want to store the backup (for example, MyDocuments or even the Desktop itself), select New --> Folder and give it a name (for example phone backup):

Right-click on this new folder and select Sharing and Security:

If you have never shared a folder before, the following dialog will be shown, allowing you to use a wizard or just enable file-sharing. Do as your prefer.

Depending on the specific edition of Windows XP that you are running, two different options may be shown:

For Home edition

Select Share this folder on the network and give it a name (or leave the default one, as you wish) and select Allow network users to change my files.

In this case, you must not set the "Backup user" in the "Server settings" screen. It will fail if you do so.

Security warning: this way, every user on the network will be able to modify your shared folder. However, if you do not check it, neither you will be able to do the backup to this folder. In a multiuser or networked system, this configuration should not be used... but this is a limitation of Windows XP Home, so in such environment you should not be using Windows XP Home, to start with...

For Professional edition

Click on Share this folder, give it a name (or leave the default one, as you wish), click on Permissions and choose Full control for Everybody.

Security warning: this configuration does not mean that everybody can write to your shared folder, because, additionally to theses permissions, the permissions on the Security tab do also apply. So go to the Security tab and check that it is set so only you can write to this folder (which is by default).
