Hi everyone, We're really happy to announce the availability of a pre-release of AMIS 2.0. You can download it from our project website: http://amis.sf.net, where you can also read about new features and sign up for mailing lists. Not that there are any bugs :) , but if you do see some, please report them. There is a link on the main page for filing bug reports. Any feedback about AMIS is really important to us -- please send all your comments to me or the mailing list (ami...@li...). We are especially interested in hearing usability reviews from screen-reader users. Also, feel free to forward this announcement to anyone you think may be interested. We are aiming for a stable release this fall, so stay tuned! Best regards, Marisa -- Marisa DeMeglio Software Development Coordinator DFA Project www.daisy-for-all.org |

Hi Marrisa It was wonderful to see the package at work. Some prelimenary comments: 1 Installation was smooth on XP professional 2) Sufficient info was available during the installation 3) GUI of the application is accessable. 4) My initial impression is a good job done 5) Doesn't recognise the folder when you ask to read from CD. 5) I could open the folderon the CD using the file open system. In fact it was a DVD media. 6) It would read some books on that DVD and throw errors on other books. Probably there is some compatiblity issues. I can send you those books. 7) There is some slight noise comming through when the book is played in normal speed. Pretty irritating. However, I found it was gone when the speed was increased. 8) Items under play, the short cut key does not trigger. One has to go through the menus. 9) It takes quite a while when the navigation commands like previous section / next section is given. I am running a 3 ghz machine. 10) I will install the package at home tonight on win 98 system and report back on it. That will be a bench mark for it is running 133 mhz with 64 mb of RAM. Hi Harish, Much thanks for your review - comments below: HP Kotian wrote: > > 3) GUI of the application is accessable. that's great to hear - did you try the navigation sidebar? did you try a book with pages, footnotes, etc? > 5) Doesn't recognise the folder when you ask to read from CD. does the disc have a discinfo file on it? if AMIS doesn't find that file, it won't bother looking for books (saves time). if you still want to search such media, do a file->search and enter the path of the disc. > 5) I could open the folderon the CD using the file open system. Hi Marisa, I am giving you my initial impressions. 1. The help book must not open every time I start amis. I can understand its opening once. 2. Application error when trying to arrow down in the book search list box Steps to duplicate the problem (1) Hit ctrl+space to pause the playing of the help file. (2) Hit alt+f then arrow to search. (3) Hit enter and type the path to brows. I had typed d: (4) Let AMIS finish its search. If it finds some books, you will see the listbox populated. (5) Tab to the listbox and start down arrowing. (6) When you reach the end of the list, continue to down arrow. (I cannot be sure about the end of the list bit) (7) AMIS will now crash with the following error - [AMIS1]: AMIS.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x00237d30" referenced memory at "0x0000000c". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program OK Cancel System configuration OS Name Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Windows Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195 System Manufacturer INTEL_ System Model D865GBF_ System Type X86-based PC Processor x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 GenuineIntel ~239... There seems to be some jerks in playback when a switch to a new section takes place. I will continue playing and report my findings. Pranav |

Hi Pranav, Thanks for the feedback. I didn't know about the search-for-books bug. That is an easy fix for sure. Do you always notice jerks in the playback when switching sections, or just for some books? Marisa Pranav Lal wrote: > Hi Marisa, > > I am giving you my initial impressions. > > 1. Hi Marisa below are some results of tests I ran through. Comments for AMIS: 1.. the ctrl + and ctrl - commands work only in numpad. Command did not work with number line + and - keys. 2.. on pressing ctrl-down for decreasing the volume, the focus jumps to virtual view mode. Jaws announces cannot find server. All keyboard commands for playback do not work as they all correspond to virtual PC cursor commands for reading the web page with headings and page numbers of the book. All these headings and page numbers are shown as links and on hitting enter to any of these links take to "cannot find server" page. I am able to come back to the treeview by choosing section in view menu. Only then the commands for play/pause etc start working again. The commands for play/pause etc also work if I switch virtual view mode off by pressing insert-z. 3.. Once the internet type of view opens, as soon as command to go to next section is given the focus again jumps to the web page type of view. Very difficult to stay into the tree view to control navigation in thiis mode. 4.. opened a book. Closed AMIS. Opened amis again. Opened the same book again. Amis did not remember where I had left reading the book and started reading the book again from the beginning. 5.. upon closing the AMIS the recent file submenu also becomes empty. 6.. when AMIS is started in normal view, only options available in the view menu are choices for sidebar. All other items like sidebar, high contrast increase fon size do not appear. All these items appear if view is changed to basic view and then back to normal view. thanks dipendra |

Hi Dipendra, Thanks for posting this, it's the kind of feedback that is really valuable right now. I'm not a very good JFW user but I suspected something was not working with the keyboard shortcuts in certain areas. I guess some of the controls are not passing along keypress info to the rest of the app. We should start using the bug tracker - I'm going to start by posting the bug-feedback collected so far. Everyone else, please feel free to make use of our web-based bug tracker: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=86978&atid=581587.
