Looking over the example code for a C plugin, I notice that a plugin gets its own menu item, but aside from that has no way of manipulating the GUI itself. This means that the Python API, which lets users add widgets to the main window but on the other hand provides no menu items, can't be implemented using the plugin API of today. It would probably be relatively trivial to move the stuff I added to the GUI code over to the plugin API, but this should probably be left as a design issue for the GNOME2 version. What I'd like to have is a facility for plugins to add widgets and menu items (or even whole menus) at will to the main window, either in predefined positions as it is today, or (if possible) in a completely flexible manner. I've no real experience with GNOME2, so I can't tell whether giving plugins random access to the GUI would be easy or completely impossible, but I'd at least like someone a little more enlightened on the subject to consider it. :) Another feature missing from the current GNOME-Mud (which I thought about implementing in the Python API but never got around to) is the ability to set up timers. It'd probably be simple to implement this in a C plugin for internal use, but I think it would be a useful feature in the core application as well, allowing users not prepared to write their own plugins to set up regularly scheduled commands to be sent to the MUD. I seem to recall zMUD having a feature like this, habitually used to prevent the character from being booted for idleness when the player has fallen asleep at the keyboard. --=20 Petter E. Last night I committed a big patch that switched us from gettext 0.10.40 to 0.11.2. Gettext 0.11 is a lot better, but it makes CVS users depend on automake 1.5 or greater. I don't consider this a drawback, but a Good Thing, as forcing ourselves to automake 1.6 is good. It fixes much of the bad stuff in the old automake. I'll probably change configure.in to 2.5x too, and rename it to configure.ac to make it very obvious. Debian users, install automake1.6 and update-alternatives --config automake :) Please test CVS to see if everyone can autogen.sh it ok, compile it, etc. Thanks! Yeah, I found out why monitor.py wasn't working when I ended up looking up the search path in python.c. My local gnome-mud has the saerch path changed. I'll commit shortly. Sure, just change this line in the python_init() function in python.c to
look for the scripts wherever you like:
foo =3D g_strdup_printf("%s/.gnome-mud/", g_get_home_dir());
Change it to read eg.
foo =3D g_strdup_printf("%s/.gnome-mud/plugins/", g_get_home_dir());
I'm too lazy to make a patch for it, but it's really a no-brainer for
anyone with CVS access who cares to do it.

Here is the shell interface and plugin base class for gnome-mud-gnome2. The basics of the shell are: The shell provides an interface for adding, retrieving, and removing objects. This is done using GValues, which are basically containers for any kind of object. The shell interface will eventually be implemented by an object in src/, which will most likely derive from GtkWindow. GnomeMudPlugin is a base class for plugins. Each plugin will basically implement a shell_set function, which is responsible for adding that plugin to the shell via the shell interface. The shell is installed as a property to each GnomeMudPlugin GObjeect. FYI, this design is shamelessly taken from anjuta2. It is (IMHO) a nice design for gnome-mud because, like anjuta2, we have one central "document" (the actual mud window), surrounded by lots of nifty little tools (alias editors, automappers, etc). Whats next? anjuta2 has interfaces for a document and a document manager. This would work for us as interfaces for a session and session manager. So, if anyone wants to come up with the behavior a session and/or session manager would exhibit, feel free to implement it as an interface (like gnome-mud-shell). Or, if it requires any discussion, we can talk about it on the list. Cheers! Neil |

Ok, so now that I'm wearing a brown paper bag [1], I've found some stuff in the python plugins that I'm not too happy about. - python.c looks for the plugins in ~/.gnome-mud/, not in ~/.gnome-mud/plugins. Any reason for that? - They are loaded automatically on startup. Mayve that's cool in some cases, but it might be uncool on some others. It also doesn't use the Plugin interface in the menu, so I wonder if that could be used too. - No way to use global plugins (/usr/share/gnome-mud/plugin/) The ideal thing would be to have a plugin section in preferences which has a list of all the available plugins, and you can select if you want to auto load it or not (and maybe other options, but that would be cool for a start). Jordi [1] I was compiling Debian's gnome-mud package against python2.2, while 2.1 is the official python version still. Would not be a problem, if there had been a python-pygtk package for 2.2. This is a bugfix release. from the NEWS file: - Minor fixes. - Added mnemonics to all menu items. - The plugin api documentation is now rewritten in DocBook and usable through your gnome-help viewer. - Added missing figures for the user manual. - The menu item now works in the GNOME2 Panel. Have fun! :) best regards Robin |

Actually, James replied to me in private. He said the tricky part would be displaying UTF8 correctly, and that should be easier with Pango and so on, yes. The rest of the stuff looked easy according to his explanation. He was going to get his hands dirty with this, but he's busy with real life this summer, so things will progress slowly. Having a more-or-less working gnome2 port by the end of the summer would ease his work, surely :) Jordi --=20 Jordi Mallach P=E9rez || jo...@pu... || Rediscovering Freedom, aka Oskuro in || jo...@si... || Using Debian GNU/Linux Reinos de Leyenda || jo...@de... || http://www.debian.org/ http://sindominio.net GnuPG public information: pub 1024D/917A225E= =20 telnet pusa.uv.es 23 73ED 4244 FD43 5886 20AC 2644 2584 94BA 917A 225E |

Ok, so should we use bonobo or should we not? :) best regards Robin |

Be sure to look at Anjuta2 as well because I think a lot of the design concepts of anjuta2 will work well for the new gnome-mud. We don't have that many views like rhythmbox does, but I think that having multiple widgets arranged in a docking fashion would be a really good UI design for a mud client. Some screenshots of anjuta2 are on the gnome-devtools list..check out the recent archives on http://lists.gnome.org Rhythmbox does use bonobo in the shell component. I think this is a good idea because you don't necessarily have to use it for plugins (anjuta2 moved away from using bonobo for plugins), but if you setup your shell using bonobo then you can easily add components/controls to the shell. I'll give some more input on this design concept when I have some more time this weekend. --Neil > > I have looked at rhythmbox, and it's kinda cool.
