You can look at http://menuetos.org , It is OS which was wrote in 
assembler.. it should be fast... but slow... it should have 
low-requirements to hardware... but it is needed to have 32 meg min. and 
vesa 2.0, 3.0 to run it.. 

It is example what we shouldn't do! Yes, We write our OS in {asm,C,C++} 
but it should be possible to load it on old >=i386 PC.
