#247 mic selection impossible?

I am sorry to bother you with a small question. I run
Fedora Core 3 on an AMD86_64 installed on an Asus
A8V Delux motherboard, with onbaord sound (VIA).

I am trying to use a mic+headset connected to the
front-panel jacks, the rear jacks are connect to
speakers, the rear mic is not used.

The speakers connected on the bakc, and the
headphones connected on front work fine.

After struggling for a long time I got the mic to work
but only when connected to the rear mic jack.

Despite all my efforts, selecting Mic1 and Mic2 and Line-
in for capture, I cannot seem to get the front panel mic
to work. I have checked the wiring and it's ok.

Would anyone have any suggestions, or procedure to
analyse the problem - I am very very new to LINUX...
