Are you using the SB awe64 gold card? My /dev/snd is the same as yours.
I got rid of the devfs stuff and used the snddevices script. still
won't work. I tried with turning the isapnp off in alsa and let the
system isapnp find the card. Not much difference. --with-debug=full
doesn't show much either. aplay hangs after heraing 1/2 sec of the file
(must kill -9). play only plays the first few seconds of a wav file then
hangs (Ctrl-C works). playmidi works and generates some lines in
/var/log/messages like

lsmod looks like lots of stuff is loaded. Oh well, here's some more
