Not sure, as mentioned somewhere earlier I have to email from work, but my system is at home so I'm compiling a check list of things to, urh, check and I'll get back with the results tomorrow. So far I've been told to check exactly where /dev/dsp points (I'm 99% sure it's to dsp0), and to find out the major device number of it, and now to check the contents of modules.conf. What sort of things should I expect to see? The only one I can really remember is: alias snd-card-0 snd-card-cmi8330 There aren't any resource options, it seems to detect them OK (well CMI8330 is listed in /proc/interupts on the correct IRQ as report in /proc/isapnp, same as listings in iomem, etc). lsmod reports a whole load of modules, including the OSS type, but still no sound.
