Yes. It is required, if you intend ALSA to be the synthesizer. > The following is the content of my /etc/modules.conf: ... > alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss ... > alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss The correct aliases are in there... > peter:~ > playmidi -e sicklysweet1b.midsound.mid ; lsmod OK, "-e" (while it may not give any errors) definitely won't make any sound from your sound card. From the man page: -e send output to external midi. This is what you'll want to do if you have any midi hardware connected to your system. This option is the default for playmidi as distributed. So it looks as if "playmidi" is equivalent to "playmidi -e". There is an ALSA-native MIDI player. Have you tried that? Also, you may have to attach MIDI port p to some port that ALSA provides, and then "playmidi -D p" ("-D" isn't in the man page... look in "playmidi -h", or maybe I have a patched version of playmidi). > snd-seq-midi 4592 0 (autoclean) > snd-seq-midi-event 3200 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-os= s] > snd-seq 44032 0 (autoclean) [snd-seq-midi snd-seq-os= s snd-seq-midi-event] Are there other modules that must be loaded, to provide a MIDI synthesizer?
