I am running the latest version of Ubuntu 9.04 - so whatever version of Alsa
comes with that....  I have already run the script you mention.  The output
is here:

I have a "Realtek ALC883" soundcard.

What happens is that if I haven't run Ubuntu for a while (several hours) and
I reboot into Linux I get sound for a few minutes.  The sound soon has
static in it and then slowly gets more static and quieter at the same time.
 by the time it becomes too quiet to hear it is all but static.  At that
point it continues to work using the headphone jacks.

Weird eh?
