Hi: I'm also a gigabyte user, with the same sound card and ALSA 0.9.2. To enable 4 channels output, you have to use alsamixer. Those controls you say are switches are used by pressing the M key (witch also mutes a channel). I'm writing from Windows so I'll tell you from memory, but I think that you have to enable "Surround as line-in" or something like that and of course raise the volume of "Surround", and also enable "signal Duplicate" or "sound Duplicate" or something like that for sound to be the same on the 4 speakers.=20 I don't know if it's necessary (for the 4 speakers output, I mean), but I use an ALSA 0.9 output plugin with XMMS. The lack of quality of the sound can be because your PCM volume is set too high, try to put it at about 86% or so. You are welcome, -=3DArCePi=3D- -----Mensaje original----- De: als...@li... I am a happy owner of GigaByte 7VA-C mainboard with VIA8235 southbridge and Avance Logic ALC650 rev 0 soundchip. I am using ALSA 0.9.2 from Debian SID packages, and I have some questions. 1. Is there any possibility to play sound in 4 channels? (f. ex. with XMMS) I can see some controls in alsamixer such as "Line-In As Surround" or "Surround". These are switches I suppose, but I can't use them. What should I do to hear sound in my 4 channels? 2. Why the sound is so bad? I tried different versions of ALSA driver beginning from 0.9.0rc7 and the sound was always the same - I don't know how to call it professionally, but I think that it is because of lack of sound interpolation or something (sound isn't as clean as I want it to be, it's like on old Atari ST or Amiga, or old trackers on PC)? I heard, that there is OSS driver in kernel 2.4.21preX for VIA82xx, and it works fine (the sound is clean). How can I get really clean sound in ALSA? (I tried the same ALSA driver with VIA8233 and the sound was good). 3. Some of the snd-via82xx module parameters are arrays. How to set such parameters? Thanks in advance Maciek ps. Should I include any system informations (/proc, lspci, etc.)? --=20 Maciej Stachura (Public GPG Key at http://www.gnome.pl/~mst/) sta...@un... ms...@gn... sta...@ci...
