This is almost fixed now. 

Moving with opt-left and opt-right was correct (i-e was mode aware). 
Selecting by words using shift-opt-left and shift-opt-right is now working similarly. The only remaining issue concerns regression of an ongoing selection which still considers alphanumeric words only (and not "words" as defined by the different modes). There is no easy way to capture this situation besides entirely rewriting everything which I have no intention to do.
