--- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install". When clicked, Alpha 9.0 downloads Alpha_9.0.1.dmg.zip [to the system-default download folder] and then, on completion, displays a "Download completed" message in the message bar and triggers the system alert sound. No install. A minor pest, but it would be nice to fix this for future versions so update functions as desired. --- Sent from sourceforge.net because alp...@li... is subscribed to https://sourceforge.net/p/alphacocoa/tickets/ To unsubscribe from further messages, a project admin can change settings at https://sourceforge.net/p/alphacocoa/admin/tickets/options. I have just re-tested everything and it works fine for me. I don't know what circumstance could have prevented the installation. The installation process logs information in `~/Library/Logs/Alpha/AlphaUpdater.log`. Could you check there if there is more information ? --- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install". I'm afraid that there isn't an `Alpha` folder in `~/Library/Logs/` only `AlphaTcl`, across multiple installations. I've just re-tested, on mulitple installs, and it fails silently. --- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Thu Dec 13, 2018 09:03 AM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install". Regarding this Alpha logs dir, I see that the AlphaUpdater app was (wrongly) assuming that creating the log file also created the intermediary dir. I did not notice because this dir has been here for years on my machines. This dir is used by all the test files. This is fixed now. Thank you for your report, I'll review this installation process again. --- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Tue Jan 08, 2019 08:54 PM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install". I tested the entire process again, and everything is working just fine. So we must understand why it fails on your machines. The fact that you do not have an `~/Library/Logs/Alpha` should not prevent the process from working (and BTW this is fixed in version 9.0.3). Operations like *Restart*, *Download* and *Install* are performed from a helper application called *AlphaUpdater.app* located in Alpha's application bundle (in `Alpha.app/Contents/Resources/Libraries/Extras`). Is it present ? When necessary, *Alpha* sends AppleEvents to *AlphaUpdater*: are you on the Mojave OS X (where AppleEvents might be disallowed) ? As an additional experiment, could you check if the *restart* command works: open the Tcl Shell (cmd-Y) and type `restart`. --- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Wed Jan 09, 2019 08:53 AM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install". *Additional remark:* it looks like you are referring to version 9.0 of Alpha which indeed had a flaw at the *Install* stage. All the tests I reported in my previous comments were done with the latest Alpha. I think this explains the misunderstanding. I'm pretty sure everything works fine since version 9.0.2 (maybe even 9.0.1, I don't remember exactly when that was fixed). Anyway, sorry for the trouble. --- ** [tickets:#204] Update Functionality: "Download and Install" Silently Fails to Install** **Status:** open **Created:** Sat Nov 24, 2018 10:06 PM UTC by jwq **Last Updated:** Wed Jan 16, 2019 11:30 AM UTC **Owner:** nobody Alpha 9.0 displayed a dialog stating that 9.0.1 is available, containing a button "Download and Install".
