Try as I right I can't find any information on how to upgrade between versions
(and this info should be clearly located with any version change right?) .. is
it a case of backup everything then overwrite it and hope for the best? I see
a patch directory full of dozens of SQL files .. do I need to run these why
are they kept here what do they patch I'm very confused. Any documentation
seems very old and refers to versions 1.5 or older, so I don't think it will
    have applicable information.

To be honest I've only been using 1.7 for a few weeks as a test-bed so I could
start all over again with the new version but I'd still like to know their is
    a simple upgrade path.

I know that each patchset has its own 'check' to determine if an SQL change is
needed with the application of that patchset, and it will offer to apply that
SQL change if you open your browser to the allocPSA instance's login screen.
It's been a while since I applied all the patchsets in a new point release of
allocPSA (such as this 1.7.1 version), so I'll need to check with the dev team
to find out if there is something special that needs to be done.

However, my default expectation is that you unpack the contents of the
delivery package over the top of your existing instance of allocPSA, then you
bring up a browser, and go to the login page of that instance, and follow the
    instructions, if any, from there.

** Please make sure you do a full backup before applying any changes **
