If your program is optimised for scrolling, you can now simulate the
scrolling using screen->screen blits (if they work - I have had trouble with
overlapping blits before). Then you can update the edge of the screen in the
same way as before.
What I did when I had trouble with overlapping blits was to write my own
blitting routine. However, I was programming solely for DOS. This won't be
easy to do in Windows... unless _getpixel() and _putpixel() would work;
perhaps someone else can elaborate.
This will be slower than the DOS version, but should still be pretty quick.
