#134052 Tracker: Causes data entry loss

Max Horn

So I just wanted to file a SourceForge.net support request. I am using the tracker beta, so I was using <https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=add&group_id=1&atid=200001>. *LUCKILY* out of paranoia, I had copied the whole description text I wrote before submitting.

Because when I pressed submit, I was lead to a page telling me: "Error, no group_id specified". True enough, I didn't select a "Group" when submitting the bug, I thought this is for you guys to set, not for me.

The problem: When using "back" in my browser (Firefox 3 on OS X), all data I had entered was *gone*. As I mentioned it, luckily I had copied it, because by now I am used to this terrible behavior. :-( Truth be told, it is much better now on project support trackers, where this bug seems to be fixed (yay!), but the SF.net tracker seems to be a bit different than others...

I believe that many bugs get never get reported, because when a user tries to report it and submits the bug report form, after entering a nice elaborate description, the whole text is lost due to this bug, and the user, who is already annoyed about another bug, won't go into the trouble of reentering it all. A loss to all involved parties :-(.

Interesting, with *this* tracker item I was able to submit it w/o specifying a group...

And looking at it, I see now that the group_id is the id of the SF.net project, and probably not related to the group popup. Indeed, if I remove the group_id from the URL, I get the error "ERROR - No group_id was chosen" I got before.

Still, the bug was there, and I came to the bug tracker via the "Help" page, so didn't enter the id incorrectly or anything. I just tried, and it again worked flawlessly. In particular, please delete this report <https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&aid=2679145&group_id=1&atid=200001>

I came here via the help page, and I tried several times to submit the bug report, always pasting my copied text again, and submitting -- it consistently failed until I selected a group. Weird coincidence then? Sadly I didn't pay close attention to the URL, so I can't be sure whether it was somehow messed up. Maybe it was...

Sorry for the confusion :/. Well, now I am confused myself... FYI, the report where this failed was <https://sourceforge.net/tracker2/?func=detail&aid=2679098&group_id=1&atid=200001>.

    Hi Max,

I think that we have done 2 things there. First, we allow submission now without the group assignment. I added this item:

Then, I have recently requested that in cases of an error, on hitting the back button that data is preserved. I'm pretty sure this was rolled out. As I'm not thinking of a valid error condition at the moment, I can't rightly test this.

Please give this another look and let me know if you agree the original issue is resolved.

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.
