As far as assuming that someone who will be running AM has a certain  
version of the OS, I'd say assume they have at least what you have.   
At least for now.  After all, the majority of the people interested  
in AM are going to be developers for the moment (and I'd venture to  
say that the majority of running time it's going to get will be on  
your computer anyway).

Thus, whatever makes it simplest and most elegant to code seems like  
the best solution to me.  Backwards compatibility can always be added  
in later, especially since we're trying to abstract the core away  
from the OS interfaces as much as possible anyway.
