I've made progress, installed a CFileTypeLookup facility... give it a 
file and it will try out what it knows to link a filetype with an 
existing file. I'm sure there's some improvements that could be made 
around how CFileTypes are passed around internally... ah well...

Anyhow, once I clean this up and check it in, there will be a few less 
uses of FSSpec. I should be getting down to the point where the 
remaining usages tie to unmodified systems... for instance the 
preferences file format or gui dialogs.
