I should point out that I was not terribly careful in my distinctions 
between Bitmaps and Buffers.  So interpret suggestions as applying to 
whichever you deem more appropriate - don't figure that I carefully 
analyzed all the interactions and decided that something really belonged 
in a Buffer rather than a Bitmap, or anything like that.
