Mostly still thinking out-loud myself.

Mostly with the errors I want to keep things simple and sweet. While 
the existing error handling isn't anything much to speak of in terms of 
threading or such, it is simple and sweet.

There's no convoluted class hierarchy, there's no tons of arguments. 
And C++ exceptions almost seem like they come with more baggage than 
they solve. Grrf
