I just installed this image:

  <ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/lsof/lsof-4.61-3.aix5.3.ppc.rpm>

on a 5.3 system, and it worked fine for me.  Are you sure you are running 
/opt/freeware/sbin/lsof?  Check your $PATH.
