I know for a fact that the file wasn't corrupted in any transfers, because there are several similar files that came in in the exact same manner (sftp, pgp-armored, decrypted, unzipped), and gpg didn't have any problem working with 3+ GB files. I also know for a fact that the file in question contains a large amount of small TIF files, rather than large files. One of the reasons I assumed it had something to do with file size is that a zcat on the file works fine - that is, the uncompressed files are displayed on stdout, but I then lose the ability to distinguish between separate files. Is there a useable way around this issue, or will I have to make sure I don't receive PKZIPped files >2GB?
