There is also another way to get more information if an rpm install fails.
Try the "-vv" option of rpm instead of "-v".
If the package file has been corrupted during the download, you should see
an error message like:

# rpm -ivv kdebase*
...
D:Header +Archive:21639000
D:expected size :28631180
error:kdebase-2.0.1-4.aix4.3.ppc.rpm cannot be installed
D:found 0 source and 0 binary packages

Look at the differences in actual and expected size of the file.

That error usually implies a download corruption.
The sum for that image should be "19303 4624".
Be sure to download binary.  If you have wget installed, use that:
  wget
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/samba/samba-2.0.7-4.aix4.3.ppc.rpm


One of the improvements that I need to do is make the sums publicly
available.
