Try "X -x dbe". > Definately new info to me, thanks. Unfortunately, even though xdpyinfo reports the extension is added if I specify a depth of 8, it still won't start if I specify a larger color depth. Also interesting, if I do just start up a session with a depth of 8, and try to exec a gnome-session from an aixterm window - it crashes. Of course, the only thing in my .xerrors file is "connection to server lost..." Now looking more carefully at the xdpyinfo output, below the place where it says there are three color depths available, it also says: depth of root window: 8 planes number of colormaps: minimum 3, maximum 4 default colormap: 0x37 default number of colormap cells: 256 yet my programs that complained about lack of color still work, even with netscape running....I have got to be going down a garden path here "I'm a big fan of ignorance based techniques, because humans have a lot of ignorance, and we want to play our strong suit."
