Patrick, the first version you describe also didn't work for me. Will take a couple of days before I can look into it. The second version should do. here is my $HOME/.xinitrc file and I startet X with "xinit -- -T" from the "command line login". I didn't really want to fool around with the root xsessions and stuff until I can experiment with it. Anyways, I tried with a user on the system and just adding the kdmdesktop invocation in my $HOME/.xinitrc When I ran the xinit command, the screen sort of flashed went blank for a little while and then returned to the command-line login prompt again.
