I came across a weird problem while I was installing the wireless service
to a customer.
I set up a PCI 340 card and connected it to a 6 dbi patch wall mount
antenna using low loss cable. Everything, card, cable and antenna are from
Cisco. On the other hand, there is a perfect line of sight between the
antenna at the customer´s site and our 12 dBi omni 700 meters away.
Here is a brief description of the problem:
Link status meter showed 100% signal quality and 46% signal strength,
however ping tests failed. 100% packet loss on all probes.
So I upgraded the card firmware to version 4.25.5 and LSM then showed 20%
signal quality and only 1% signal strength. Under these conditions there
were a few successful ping tests. So, I slowed down the speed to 1 Mbps. on
ACU instead of letting the card assign it dynamically and found that things
improved a lot, for example ftp transfer rates of 60 Kbps. All this at
approx. 20 % signal quality and 1 or 2 % signal strength !
The problem I wasn´t able to resolve is that when the signal strength and
quality (randomly) improve (say 30% or more signal strength and 40% or more
signal quality) data transfer stops. Absolutely no single bit comes or goes
out. I tried changing some settings in ACU (such as speed and radio power)
but nothing improved.
Does anyone have a clue why this may be happening?
Good transfer rates with poor quality and strength and no transfer at all
with better quality and strength? I have no explanation for this.
