Hello, I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and an Aiptek 12000U tablet. I'd really like to get it going, but the information I find confuses me. I have found the aiptektablet project on sourceforge: http://aiptektablet.sourceforge.net/ . I also I took a look at the sourceforge page itself: http://sourceforge.net/projects/aiptektablet . The only documentation I considered relevant was the WIP release, which I didn't understand (I don't have profound knowledge of Linux, e.g. I never edited the xorg.conf). Also, I found a tutorial in the ubuntu documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AiptekTablet . I was wondering about that the tutorial does not use the aiptektablet sourceforge project at all. Actually, I don't know which documentation to follow. It would be great if you could give me some orientation, something like: "Read this link and follow this tutorial, and it'll (probably) (maybe) work!" Alexander -- http://www.airlich.de |

I'm currently the only developler left (I joined recently, maybe Waldeck Schutzer joins, too) and the whole aiptektablet project is kind of stalled. The aiptek tablet driver is included in the Linux kernel and xorg, but both may have an outdated version of it, which no longer works (especially xorg). maybe someone at Ubuntu patched it? Hi, I really don't know what to do about my Aiptek 12000U. I decided to go on painting in Gimp, and I also am happy with the tablet, so the idea of having to buy and get used to another tablet ONLY because I couldn't get the Aiptek running on Linux is really annoying. So I re-post my problem; I attatched my original message and Jan's reply. Also, just to point that out: I tried the Aiptek 12000U both on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) and on 8.04 (Hardy, which I'm currently using), and it had the same effect: It basically works, it's just not pressure sensitive. So I'm really looking forward to replies. 2008/11/22 Alexander Erlich <ale...@gm...>: > Hello, > > I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and an Aiptek 12000U tablet. Hi Alexander, Have you tried this on Gimp? This is what works quite well for me on Intrepid: choose Edit->Preferences then open the Input Devivces tab. Under Extended Input Devices, hit the Configure Extended Input devices button. The Configure Input Devices dialog box should pop up. Now click on the Device combo box. There you should find Aiptek, so click on it. Finally, choose Screen on the mode combo and hit Save to close that dialog box. Now you should be back to the Preferences dialog, so hit the Save Input Devices Settings Now button, to keep you choices permanent throughout sessions. Now you should be able to enjoy the pressure sensitivity. Hope this helps, Waldeck Schutzer On Fri, 2009-02-06 at 22:45 +0100, Alexander Erlich wrote: > Hi, > > I really don't know what to do about my Aiptek 12000U. Hi Waldeck, thank you very much for your reply! Unfortunately, in the Configure Input Devices dialog box, I could not find such a thing as the Device combo box (http://www.airlich.de/Gimp/2.png). Maybe, that is because my Aiptek is not recognized at all. I checked it in the Input Controller tab and found that my tablet was neither among the available nor among the active controlers. So I added a Linux Input (http://www.airlich.de/Gimp/1.png), but it says there "Device not available: Permission denied", and there was no effect. I wonder whether you succeeded with the same model, Aiptek HyperPen 12000U? If so, I will try Intrepid again :-) Thank you! Hi Alexander, No problem! I'm glad to help! The combo-box I mentioned is the one showing the one showing your Configured Mouse. If you click on it, you should see Aiptek on the list. Check out my screen shot here: http://www.dm.ufscar.br/profs/waldeck/the-gimp.jpg In fact, the Aiptek tablet does not show on my list of Input Controllers either, but it works as I told you before nevertheless. My tablet is actually the Trust TB-4200, AFAIK a rebrand of the 12000U. >From the driver point-of-view, yours and all other derivatives/rebrands should work just fine. The driver for these beasts consist of two parts: a kernel driver and a xorg driver. I made a few changes to the kernel driver to take advantage of the increased resolution on the 12000U. Mine is running at about 3000DPI instead of the default 500DPI. I also made a few changes in the xorg driver to implement filtering, but I have not had great success. It seems to me that the sampling rate on the hardware is not enough to achieve the desired resolution. My pointer actually shivers a bit and I was trying to smoothen it out. Unfortunately I do not have the time right now to finish what I started. As soon as I can do that I'll be discussing the changes with Jan to see if they are sound enough to eventually make their way to the distros. Hope this helps. I am having the same problem with a Trust TB-3100, pressure does not work at all with the Gimp. Can you use pressure on Gimp?? I think it is a matter of permissions. I'm maybe taking a look into it soon. Any comments?? I have already sent a bug to Ubuntu. It has prevented me from using it for months!! (well, also my exams, and my work). It would maybe be a good idea to change the default pemissions so to be able to configure it properly from the beginning. Hi Néstor, AFAIK this is not a matter of permissions. If you followed the guides, you should get you tablet to work just fine, including pressure sensitivity. This is just a matter of setting it up properly on Gimp, as the screenshot I posted can confirm. I'm also quite happy with my tablet working fine on InkScape as well. Please let us know if you still have trouble using your tablet. Sorry. Now, I have everything in my FTP server, which is: ftp://nestux.homelinux.org/aiptek/ All the formerly attached documents are now there. It was too big for the mailing list!! I must apologize, I didn't realize. That's why I forward this message. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Néstor <nes...@gm...> Date: Wed, Feb 11, 2009 at 10:39 PM Subject: Re: [Aiptektablet-users] Aiptek 12000U: Really don't know where to start To: aip...@li... I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 on a 32bit machine, with it's default Xorg server updated for security to the last stable version. Nope, nothing. I would REALLY want to go and solve this issue :-) Please, take a look at the attached information. I will surely help you if I can, because I have this tablet since at least 6 months. And I can not use it on Ubuntu!! If you need more information, or anything else, tell me. The sooner I get this working the better :-) I have got the following: /dev/input/aiptektablet link to the device, with proper permissions. Permissions are set by hand, until now. "pen" device under Xorg.conf, Gimp 2.4.5 recognizes it flawlessly, You can use it as a normal mouse, clicking on menus and so on. (BTW, is this the right behaviour??) # evtest /dev/input/aiptektablet > evtest works also flawlessly, look at the compressed output attached. It even recognizes the pressure So what am I doing wrong?? Thank you. Hi Néstor, Actually the right behavior for the pointer would be Window Mode. The problem with the pressure sensitivity is not an issue in the drivers but it has to be properly set up on Configure Extended Input Devices. Please have a look at this screenshot: http://www.dm.ufscar.br/profs/waldeck/the-gimp.jpg Everything else seems ok to me, although I have never had to worry about the permissions before. Actually on Intrepid, which I am now using, the soft link /dev/input/aiptektablet is no longer needed, and you can plug in and unplug your tablet anytime (but during the logon, due to an undiagnosed problem that causes xorg to crash). Thank you, Waldeck. But I'm using Screen Mode (in Spanish, "Screen" = "Pantalla", "Window" = "Ventana"). So yes, it should work. I'm sorry because it's not in English, I'll be putting it in English for the next time. Maybe it doesn't work on Ubuntu Hardy at all, or just with my tablet?? Could you try it please with Ubuntu Hardy? Thank you, again. On Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 4:11 AM, Waldeck Schutzer <wa...@dm...> wrote: > Actually I meant to say Screen Mode! Hi Waldeck, thank you for your screenshot! I tried it, but unfortunately, no chance on Hardy for me. Aiptek is not listed where it should be. But as you said you had Intrepid, I tried that too, with slightly more success. I used it as a live CD ("boot with no changes to your computer"), I have no installed version in Intrepid. Both my notebook and my standalone PC showed the same behaviour. With the Aiptek inserted and Intrepid booted, I can use the tablet to move on the desktop, but the click does not work at all. I can not click on symbols, not drag the select box, nothing of that (all of that actually does work on Hardy). When I tried the Configure Input Devices dialog in Gimp (http://www.airlich.de/Gimp/3.png), Aiptek was actually recognized, like in your screenshot (and unlike in Hardy). But I could not make any changes to that dialog window! Pressure was on "none" by default, and choosing 1 or 2 was immediately "forgotten", dropping back on none. In the same manner, everything else was unchangeable. Do you have any idea what might be wrong? Alexander 2009/2/11 Waldeck Schutzer <wa...@dm...>: > Hi Alexander, > > No problem! I'm glad to help!
