the solution to this that we are going to follow at York is to handle all
the authentication through Moodle.

Moodle has a large number of different options for how it does its
authentication and thus there should be something there for most
institutions. You can find a description of the features here:

I think it would be too much work to try to replicate all that in AiM
itself.
