Pressing "New version" a couple of time usually makes the error go away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Neil Strickland (npstrick) Date: 2003-08-30 21:24 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=430681 There was a small problem (now fixed) with the aim/LaTeX package, which I conjecture was the root cause of the bug reported by Gustav. As I said to my other email it will be very difficult to instruct them how to change settings .. its better if they keep their old ones. Another comment on the installation instructions: AIM it doesn't start any more from startaim.sh but from the tomcat directory/bin/startup.sh to ease testing and not stop tomcat completely one can use the following: http://localhost:8080/manager/stop?path=/AIM http://localhost:8080/manager/start?path=/AIM Manolis ps. At least in current versions of Tomcat, yes. > Does it by default use port 8080? Is that why the default has been changed > from 80 to 8080? During the installation Tomcat gave me the option to set the port. The default value provided by the installation was 8080. I don't know whether the Tomcat installation script was so intelligent to notice that I already had a web server on port 80. I just assumed Tomcat would always choose 8080. What default port did it give you? >I was going to add some comments about this, as if one > already has an installation using port 80, one has to remember to set that > in ManualConfig.mpl ... otherwise admin.html, index.html and > DefaultZone.mpl (in root/) are set with :8080 in their paths, and if one > adds port 80 to ManualConfig.mpl afterwards and reruns AutocConfig.mpl > these files are not rewritten (and you have to manually change them). Yes, you are right, something like that should be added to the instructions. > Is there an advantage to using port 8080 instead of port 80? Probably not if 80 is still free. However I have heard that on unix one needs superuser privileges to install a server on port 80 but not for installing one on port 8080. But as I said, I know nothing about unix. > > I will make sure that I upload the java and tomcat installation files to > > aimmath.sourceforge.net. It may have to wait until Monday though. Actually, I changed my mind. I would prefer not to upload the JDK with its 35MB. Sourceforge only gives us 100MB alltogether for the site. It seems to me that users who are sophisticated enough to want to be able to recompile the java sources will be competent enough to get the installation file directly from sun. I have uploaded the JRE and Tomcat already. You might want to check that they are alright. Gustav |

Ken, Many thanks for fixing the bug I reported. And for all your other work on the Aim system. I have no objections to a delay of the release. I'd be happy to run with AIM 2 until Christmas. The JISC mail list should be still operational. I will look into this on Monday. I wondered why you had left that out of the Windows instructions ... I had thought it had something to do with the MathML though Moodle discussions etc. I just had a look in AutoConf.mpl, I see that it looks in all the default places on the system (/usr/local/bin, /usr/bin/, /bin) and then checks in the webapps/AiM directory ... very nice. I guess the only thing to say is something along those lines. > 2) In the section about AiM towards the end of step 2 you say that Tomcat's > server.xml file is overwritten during installation. That is no longer the > case. I guess I didn't understand all the discussion about this. Are you saying that the default server.xml that Tomcat provides was ok as it was? Does it by default use port 8080? Is that why the default has been changed from 80 to 8080? I was going to add some comments about this, as if one already has an installation using port 80, one has to remember to set that in ManualConfig.mpl ... otherwise admin.html, index.html and DefaultZone.mpl (in root/) are set with :8080 in their paths, and if one adds port 80 to ManualConfig.mpl afterwards and reruns AutocConfig.mpl these files are not rewritten (and you have to manually change them). Hi Greg, One of the packages I'm preparing to commit should solve this problem (and most math-formatting related problems) without the need for a new flag. I'm currently writing up extensive documentation for it and should be finished in the the next couple of days. KEN |

Dear Greg, I have looked at your new linux installation instructions. Very nice! I have to now polish the windows installation instructions to be able to compete. I have two comments: 1) Tth no longer needs to be installed because it comes bundled with the AiM release. Section 4 of the installation instructions can therefore go. 2) In the section about AiM towards the end of step 2 you say that Tomcat's server.xml file is overwritten during installation. That is no longer the case. I will make sure that I upload the java and tomcat installation files to aimmath.sourceforge.net. It may have to wait until Monday though. Gustav |

I have been using a version of AiM based on the state of about 4-5 weeks ago for our quizzes here (our 2nd semester started then). There were a few minor bugs (which may even be fixed by now), but the new multipart question feature was such a valuable new feature (thanks Neil) that I have been working around the bugs. I agree with the sentiments above ... the idea of a freeze on new code, is to prevent the entry of a potential horde of new bugs which might delay the release of version 3.0 even further. [BTW I hadn't realised that AiM stood for `Assessment in Mathematics' as opposed to AIM = Alice Interactive Mathematics where ALICE = Active Learning In a Computing Environment. This is a bit of a shift in thinking, from a `learning tool' to an `assessment tool' ... personally I ascribe to the `learning tool' philosophy ... ] I also have a lot of new code I'd like to add but I think it could be improved significantly; the new code wouldn't look like a series of add-on hacks, if I were to implement an idea of a new flag. The idea is to have a flag ad> or answerdisplay> which would declare a function that would override the standard display mechanism. Without such a feature I have resorted to hacking TextQuestion.mpl at the point where it displays the student and teacher answer. We are just coming off a non-teaching week ... our next such break is in another 4 weeks, by which time I'll be ready to test any new code Ken might have ready. Hopefully, the ad> idea will be ready too and my other add-on features redesigned to use it. This will miss AiM 3.0 ... but I think the most important thing this time around was the addition of the multipart questions ... I didn't realise how much I'd missed this feature until I started using it. Regards, Greg |

Now that we have decided to allow ourselves one more week before closing AiM 3.0 to new developments, I would be interested to hear from all of you what changes you are planning on submitting. I know already some plans from some of you but repeat everything anyway so that we can all get an overview. I personally would like to do the following: 1) improve navigation for the lecturer by having a navigational bar on all administrative pages that allows the lecturer to jump directly to the most important administrative pages. 2) improve help by having pop-up help windows for most of the links on the administrative pages. I want to do this moodle-style, i.e., with a little question mark icon next to the link. When clicking on the question mark a pop-up window opens with a description of the page that will be opened by that link. I won't have to do too much writing because the help text is already there in teacher.html. However I really am not sure that I will have enough time. It will probably have to wait until the next release unless someone else wants to do it (or is perhaps already doing it?). Gustav |

I will work on AIM this evening and tomorrow evening, which should be enough to clear the bugs that I currently know about, in particular the problem with the s> flag. I agree with Gustav that we should definitely make a release in time for the coming semester in Britain. I would ask everyone on the list to help by testing things as thoroughly as they can over the next week. Neil |

I agree with the bit about delaying the release of AiM 3.0 beta, that's what we have been doing. But I don't agree that we can delay it for a month. Maybe AiM 2003 would have been a better name than AiM 3.0 to make my view clear. There needs to be a stable release that we can use during the upcoming academic year. And this release needs multi-part questions. I also agree with Ken that we need more time to produce a more polished version of AiM. We should make sure that AiM 2004 will be truly polished. As far as we in the UK are concerned, the real deadline for the stable release of AiM 2003 is the start of the autumn term in the second week of October. So that is still over one month away. But to be sure that it will be truly stable, we have to continue to give ourselves tight deadlines for the beta. > In addition, I have about 3000 lines of new code and bug fixes that I have > been documenting and working on all week in order to get it ready > to commit, > but I would like to discuss these changes with the list and test them with > the changes others have made recently before committing them. > Thus I think > a one month delay would do the project a lot of good. Wonderful! I am looking forward to seeing your new code. I think we can still get it into AiM 2003. How about delaying the beta for another week? > On a related matter, I have fixed the problem with the guest account that > Chris reported, but didn't commit that fix yet. Thanks for the fix. Please commit it as soon as you get a chance. Gustav |

I propose that we delay the release of the AiM 3.0 beta for at least a month. It would allow us to fix all the bugs correctly and would give us time to add more features and test the new version more thoroughly. While it would be nice to release a new version for the start of the Fall semester, it might do AiM's reputation more good in the long run if new users have a good first impression by giving them a more stable, well-tested release to play with. In addition, I have about 3000 lines of new code and bug fixes that I have been documenting and working on all week in order to get it ready to commit, but I would like to discuss these changes with the list and test them with the changes others have made recently before committing them. Thus I think a one month delay would do the project a lot of good. On a related matter, I have fixed the problem with the guest account that Chris reported, but didn't commit that fix yet. On a completely different matter, Mike Fraboni wrote to me today saying that he tried to write to the JISC AIM list but it doesn't seem to work. Is that list shut down?
