Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I'm here. Sorry about my absence lately. I was the victim of "downsizing" at my company (it's their insane belief that letting people go will transform them into a profitable company due to the wages that need no longer be paid) and so I find myself out of a job. For the moment my priority must be finding another job. But I'm basically ready to release another version of AfW which includes much more extensive mailbox handling. I may be able to slip that in sometime soon, though the process imposed by SourceForge makes it a fairly complex undertaking. I'll do my best, however. Does this thing still work? :-) Hey Daniel...and everyone else...either we've all been busy working on other stuff..or AfW is perfect! :-D I just wanted to give a shout ..and see how things were going with you and everyone using AfW. I ran into one bug where I was trying to change my SMTP server in AfW's web interface...and it would make the change in one area of AfW but it wouldn't make it in the askrc file...so I had to manually edit that to change it. Actually, that's just a "normal" error where the nasty mail client hung up
before the pop3 server could say goodbye. Most mail headers are optional, so
it's not unusual to see no subject, sender, etc. in spam. I *thought* I
covered this particular error previously, but I made an error in the fix.
Ironic, or what? :) Anyway, I apologize. Attached is a new pop3server.py
which should replace the current one. Stop the pop3server, replace the file,
then restart the server.

Yes, this is related. I've come up with a better fix that will cover both cases. I've attached a new sendmail.py instead of trying to paste in a section of code. It's also in CVS if that's your preference. Thanks again, Tim! Well here is another strange error I'm getting now..possibly similar to the previous one?

File "C:/AfW/sendmail.py", line 121, in main
session.quit()
UnboundLocalError: local variable 'session' referenced before assignment
Let me know if you need any logs..

I just use AfW, actually. I don't like the "false positives" - not to mention the "false negatives" - of the other systems. If I were to use one it would be BEHIND AfW, not in front, just to catch the few stray spams that make it through ASK. As for the bandwidth issue, that's the exact reason Marco (ASK author) didn't write ASK to run on local machines. But my point at the time was that most people (especially Windows users) don't have access to their own mail server and so couldn't run ASK at all. My solution (AfW) does increase outgoing bandwidth, but at least we have access to ASK now. Okay, so it looks like external mail systems are smarter than Python's rfc822 module at decoding email. The supposedly mangled message got back to me intact. Odd, because when I look in my AfW "sent items" folder (an upcoming feature:) the first paragraph is missing, and looking at the actual saved text file that was sent out, the first paragraph occurs inside the header (the bug) and so doesn't get included in the body of the message. Oh well, I fixed the bug anyway. Sorry for the repeat messages.

I was contemplating all these confirmations that my AfW has to send out on a daily basis. Right now I only have a 1 layer of Spam detection/protection, AfW. I was trying to think of ways to cut down on how many confirmations that AfW has to send out (and how much bandwidth it uses). I can only fathom that 90-95% of them are just confirmations sent to spammers. Have any of you guys that use AfW setup a 2nd layer of spam detection/protection..that sits in front of AfW? Like for example..run POPFile..or some other Bayesian filter/detection so that only those e-mails that don't look like spam get sent confirmations? That way you could save on bandwidth usage. I am trying to determine if it might be more hassle than it's worth...appreciate any insight you guys have on the issue. :-) Cheers! -- Tim Jaeger company: Remnant Publications e-mail: tj...@re... bus. phone: 517-279-1304 fax phone: 517-279-1804 |

Oops! Sending that last bug fix message showed me a slight bug in the "reply" function of the new version. It resulted in my message being sent out without the first paragraph. I've fixed it, so this message *should* go out unmangled. Here's the full text of my previous message:
Thanks for the heads-up, Tim! If you want a quick fix, add these lines to sendmail.py at line 112 (line 111 should start with 'self.log.write'):
except UnboundLocalError:
refused = {}
Retain the leading spaces: the "except" should line up with the "except" on line 108 and the "refused" should be four spaces in from the "except". This fix will be in the next release.

And I'm including the .nsi file to make the installer for 0.3.1a. I've added a "Run ASK after setup" checkbox to the finish page. The finish page no longer pops up automatically, you now have time to click "Show Details" and review what it did. Updated the script for the current CVS version of NSIS 2.0b4. It cleanly uninstalls the files it installs, at least from what I can tell. And, of course, it uses the new ask subdirectory for the ask stuff (as per 0.3.1a changes). It works for me. Please note: for upgraders, you should be able to run the uninstall process (assuming you used the previous installers), then run this installer. Between running them, check your afw folder - it should have only the 2 .rc files and the home directory left. Actually, I've covered all that in the latest version of AfW... :) The error you're seeing happens when you cancel a web page while it's still loading. Python's built-in CGI handler doesn't handle this very gracefully, so I had to go to great lengths to hook into it and stop the insanity. If you're interested, it's available via anon CVS, or you could wait a day or so for the next release (0.3.1a). It has some interesting changes, but there's one change you need to be aware of before getting the latest sources: I've moved the ASK distribution to a directory within the AfW directory. This cleans things up a bit and makes it easier for me to do a distribution. But the catch is that the latest sources are expecting to see this new directory. To upgrade before the new release, you'll need to get the 2.4.1 release of ASK and extract it to the AfW directory. That should create an "ask-2.4.1" directory, which needs to be renamed simply to "ask". You can delete everything else in the AfW directory except users.rc, modules.rc and the "home" directory. You may want to retain your log files as well. After that, simply do a CVS update and all will be restored. That'll be the last major structural change for quite a while. AfW started as an add-on to ASK, but it's turning into something which uses ASK as an add-on. The new structure reflects this more clearly. I'd been meaning to do it for a while, and I finally got around to it. Excellent! I'm about to do another release, so I think I'll wrap up the distribution with your installer and include it as an installation option. This _is_ alpha software, after all. People should be prepared to take chances with new stuff like this. :) The new release fixes a few small bugs, cleans up and refactors the code a fair bit, and includes a new inbox management section. You can now see your inbox through the web interface, replying to, forwarding or deleting each message, as well as creating and sending off new messages. It's simple (so far) but it works. But it would actually be a question for Marco Paganini, the author of Active Spam Killer itself. The POP3 client I wrote retrieves mail from remote servers and hands it to ASK. If it's not spam, ASK then delivers it directly to your mailbox on the same machine. The next time AfW sees it, it's already in your mailbox - and AfW doesn't know or care where it came from. ASK needs to intervene (according to some configurable variable) and send the mail off to another server instead of delivering it to the local mailbox. As for Python, I've never learned an easier language. AfW is my first attempt at programming in Python, and it's been pretty successful so far! :) Of course, I've been poking around at computers since 1979... ----------------- I see dumb people -----Original Message----- From: afw...@li... Subject: [afw-general] Feature request Feature request: I run a local mail server (I run iMail server for personal use). I'd like to be able, instead of queueing the approved/ok messages in afw's pop3 server, to instead send them via smtp to another "server" (which in my case would be localhost). Currently, I run E.R.C. to query (aka fetchmail) the messages from the afw pop3 server and forward them to the local smtp server (from which in turn I download them via imap, I can never stay with one email client and imap fixes that problem of constantly moving messages back and forth). I don't know python at all, and taking a look at it, I don't know that I have the time to learn it well enough to make decent code. So, I send in the feature request. :) Daniel Ellison wrote: >This is to announce the availability of AfW version 0.2a. Okay, new NSI script. Modern UI, Start menu selection, welcome and finish pages, looks pretty cool. Compiles for me with latest CVS NSIS 2.0b4. The uninstaller actually removes most of the files now. Something I don't know is if changes are made to the site-local lists (blacklist, etc.) if they are reflected in templates\*.* or somewhere else. If somewhere else, I can safely delete the templates\ folder when uninstalling. Otherwise this works great so far. My dog ate my sig file Christopher Wiegand chr...@co...
