Changed Permissions on Remote Folder

The protocol changed the permissions on the remote share after I had changed the permissions on the local folder into which I had mounted the share.
I had mounted a share called "OS X Applications" into the folder /mnt/test. I was unable to browse the folder via Nautilus so I changed the ownership of /mnt/test from root to my local account.
Then someone else tried to access the same share and said that the ownership had been changed on the remote system as well, it was owned by local account.
Just to note: Even though I couldn't browse the share via Nautilus, I was able to browse it via a terminal.
