Can anyone kindly tell me how to make my NAS hibernate (or shutdown) when not in use and to power on when someone wants to use the media server, please? I have the 214 if it makes any difference.

If the 214 can be started using WAKE ON LAN you should configure your mediaplayer to issue a wake on lan packet when accessing the diskstation.
I've some diskstations which shut down when not used. I'm using kodi on raspberry Pi as mediaplayer. Kodi / OSMC issues a wake on lan to the diskstation the file is located an waits for startup.

I want to realize the following scenario:
After dedicated ip address is active in my LAN, I want DS214 to wake up with help of WOL. During the period of activity of ip address DS should behave normally, this means - when in use, the disks are spinning, when not in use, the disks go into the sleeping mode after defined time. After dedicated ip address is no more responsive (switched off) I want DS214 to switch off.
I tried to use APM and set Poweroff settings (Hosts, when I wrote the ip address into the List of hosts, and set the Rapid shutdown (the Poweroff settings to be active after DS is switched on after WOL).
The DS214 switching off is working well except the fact, that after DS214 is on, disks are spinning all the time a they do not go into the sleeping mode at all. When I disable APM, the disks go into the sleeping mode, as they should.
I thing the disks are spinning all the time because the APM is pinging on the dedicated ip address and probably some reports are written to the disks. But is it possible to enable disks sleeping mode when APM is active in my scenario?
Thanks for help. The APM is a nice piece of software, but I am not able to use it unless disks sleeping mode is implemented.

Well, I do not know the 214.
