manpages contain 'n' instead of punctuation

The manpages in all AdvanceMame related projects all contain strange TROFF commands that don't work with GNU Troff (in other words, the manpage processor for all Linux distros as far as I can tell). Commands like '(hy' and '(oq' are turned into 'n'. This makes for manpages that are very messy and hard to read. I've never seen this sort of grammar. I suppose '(hy' is supposed to code for a hyphen, but why do that when '-' does the trick? Where are these new commands documented? Google isn't helping.
Whoops, those commands should have backslashes in front of them.
Hi David,
Likely you can help here:
What format should I use to represent the chars:
For - I see that \- works. And for the others ?
Thanks,
Andrea
