The software seems useful but can it support more formats? I don't know of another program which will allow me to search PDF files. I am sure to use this.

ADRS is built primarily for the academic community and therefore supports the primary academic research paper format, Adobe PDF. The PDF support is fairly comprehensive, however the software can be extended to support other formats.
ADRS is built to support plugins and as such you can write your own plugins to support any arbitrary file type which does not require altering the main program code (you'll need to be able to program in java though.)
I assume that the University of Birmingham would be willing to program such plugins (as they own the copyright of the software), and I would also be happy to develop any plugins required.
