I would like to request that connections to the database are not created unless there is a need. In a website application, for example, if all the queries for a page a re cached then there is no need to connect to the database. This would provide a significant performance boost by eliminating connection latency and freeing up system resources. After reviewing the code it is my belief that there could be a check put in place in a few functions that would test to see if a connection is established and to create one if not. These checks would go into the execute and prepare functions. I've tested this concept out and the benefit is tremendous. I've had it running in a production environment for months now with no issues. I serve ~50 million page views a day so this has been properly abused.
