I'm sorry you had to find out this way....the tutorial is out-of-date.
In 2.0.5, you *need* to call IActiveLock_Init() prior to calling 
Acquire().  Have a look at ALTestApp in 2.0.5.

Ooh...nasty error! This is probably related to you not having called 
Init() prior, but nevertheless, it's a bug.  I'll look into it.
