Version 1.7.0 of the ActiveGEM package was released today by MRG Interactive. The plotGEM GEMPAK plotting interface has undergone several important enhancements for this release. In particular, the surface observational data plotting abilities of the plotGEM have been greatly enhanced. In v1.7.0, the user is provided with low-level control of surface data plotting through a separate pop-up window activated on request. Additionally, background satellite and radar data (an colour enhancements thereof) have been implemented, allowing for the superposition of gridded or observed fields over satellite and radar imagery.
Version 1.6.0 of the ActiveGEM package was released today by MRG Interactive. The plotGEM GEMPAK plotting interface has undergone a series of medium and minor bug fixes and upgrades since the v1.5.1 interim release. Although several outstanding issues remain, it was felt that enough stability had been achieved in the current implentation to warrant the beta release of an updated package. Most of the upgrades in v1.6.0 stem from suggestions made by testers at the University at Albany (State University of New York), and some represent much-enhanced functionality in the interface.... read more
Version 1.5.0 of the ActiveGEM package was distributed today for widespread testing at the University at Albany (State University of New York) Department of Earth and Atmospheric Science. This is the first official introduction of the ActiveGEM plotting software (plotGEM) to a community wider than the developers and front-line debuggers. Approximately 20 people (graduate students, professors and IT support) attended the hour-long introductory session, the brief powerpoint from which can be accessed via the package's homepage at http://activegem.sourceforge.net . With this introductory release to experienced GEMPAK users, it is hoped that the rate of bug reporting and feature requesting will increase, paving the way for the eventual production release of a stable version of this software.... read more
Version 1.4.1 of the ActiveGEM package was released on 2 March, 2004, and contains several important upgrades over the previous publicly-released package (v1.4.0). Of most interest is the implementation of a memory management system in the plotGEM interface, which allows users much more flexibility in 'superposition' and 'overlay' modes and allows them to move back and forth through layers without losing overlying information. As well, several bugs have been identified and fixed, including colour mapping problems for 'orange-red' and 'violet' and device resets for 'multi-time' selections.... read more

ActiveGEM is a beta-version set of graphical interfaces for the popular GEMPAK (General Meteorolgical Package) package distributed by Unidata under UCAR. The interface is written primarily in perl/Tk, with some loading requirements fulfilled with Fortran90. Although one of the interfaces (plotting) has been under development for some time, other members of the package are still in the planning stages.... read more
