You are using bash or some sh-like shell, right?
If so, ``number>filename'' is a special redirection syntax.
There needs to be a blank between 4 and >, as in
echo 4 >/proc/acpi/sleep
or the shell will just open /proc/acpi/sleep on file descriptor 4,
and still send echo's output to stdout!
