IMHO, the option to login to a remote mail server (as
opposed to the localhost) should be considered.

Granted, this may not the default configuration, but as a
personal (as opposed to a professional) user, it would be
nice, as I envision using a web interface to access my
mail on (multiple) remote servers.

Why would I want to do this? Because this is a very
elegant solution for accessing mail across the globe
from behind restrictive firewalls (i.e. only allow port (80
or) 443 going out). Because if I can run the http server
on my local machine and access my IMAP or POP
server via a secure channel, I can keep tighter control
over the security of my mail and access. Call me
paranoid or a control freak. ::)
