WebBench is a lightweight Linux command-line utility for stress-testing web servers with many simultaneous HTTP clients. It uses fork() to create separate client processes that repeatedly request a specified URL. The tool can simulate up to approximately 30,000 concurrent connections to evaluate server behavior under heavy load. Users can configure the number of clients and the duration of a benchmark. It supports HTTP/0.9, HTTP/1.0, and HTTP/1.1 along with GET, HEAD, OPTIONS, and TRACE requests. Requests can also be sent through a proxy, and optional modes can ignore responses or request reload behavior. WebBench was originally written by Radim Kolar in 1997 and remains a compact example of Unix-style load testing.
