terminal-image is a Node.js package for displaying images directly inside color-capable terminal applications. It supports PNG and JPEG files as well as animated GIF playback. Terminals with native graphics protocols, including compatible iTerm2 and Kitty environments, can display images at full resolution. Other terminals fall back to colored Unicode block characters using ANSI output. Developers can specify image width and height as terminal dimensions or percentages while preserving aspect ratio by default. The package accepts both image files and in-memory buffers. GIF rendering includes configurable frame-rate limits and custom frame handlers, making the library suitable for rich CLI previews and media-oriented terminal tools.

Features

  • PNG and JPEG terminal rendering
  • Animated GIF playback
  • Kitty and iTerm2 native graphics support
  • ANSI block-character fallback rendering
  • Configurable image dimensions and aspect ratio
