Open is a cross-platform Node.js package for launching URLs, files, directories, and executables from command-line tools or scripts. It uses the operating system's default application unless developers request a specific program. Applications can also pass command-line arguments to the program being opened. The package works across macOS, Windows, Linux, and Windows Subsystem for Linux environments. On Linux, it includes an up-to-date xdg-open implementation, while WSL support can translate paths for Windows applications. Open uses process spawning rather than shell execution, which avoids several problems associated with command-string execution. It is distributed as a native ESM package and expects developers to sanitize untrusted values before opening them.

Features

  • Cross-platform URL and file opening
  • Default or explicitly selected application launching
  • Application argument support
  • Windows Subsystem for Linux path support
  • Bundled Linux xdg-open integration
  • Process spawning without shell execution
