Icaros is a Windows shell extension package designed to improve multimedia file previews and metadata handling in File Explorer. It generates thumbnails for video formats supported by FFmpeg, including MKV, AVI, MP4, MOV, and FLV. The software can also extract embedded cover artwork from supported audio and video files. Its property handler displays metadata such as duration, resolution, title, and audio channel information directly in Explorer. Users can configure supported file extensions and customize thumbnail generation settings. A dedicated cache system improves thumbnail retrieval and supports pre-generating previews for selected folders. The IcarosConfig utility provides graphical controls for activation, file associations, and cache management. Icaros supports Windows Vista through Windows 11 and is distributed as freeware rather than open-source software.
