[Samtools-help] Picard found many insert sizes that are shorter than the read lengths?

Dear all, I need your help in interpreting the insert size metrics please? For one of our Illumina set of reads we have created an insert size distribution plot via Picard-tools and we found that many of the sizes clustered around 90-100bp, and the minimum insert size is 2bp. I learned from Picard's help page that these are likely "artifacts" but what does this exactly mean? Where are they derived from, if we are positive that all of our reads is more than 90bp long each?
