title bar displays only one character

    Hi all,

Since version v5.3.1 the title bar of Notepad++ window display only one character instead of full file name.
It does not happen immediately, usually i have to open a file.
Changing tab changes the window title, but I still see only the first letter.
If the file currently displayed has been changed, i see only an asterisk.

Once the problem has occurred, it never returns to the normal "full name" feature, even closing all opened files.

Closing Notepad++ when this error has occurred will cause a typical "error" sound in Windows, but without any warning displayed. The application appear to close itself correctly anyway.

I thought it was an "upgrade" problem, but the problem exist also with a new installation on a completely clean system.

    Problem:
title bar displays only the first character of the file name.
closing the application will cause a "windows error sound" but no warning.

    Steps to reproduce:
Usually it's enough to open a new file.
it does not happen consistently, but very very often (8 times every 10).

    My system:
Windows XP profesionnal Sp3, all updates.
Nvidia video card with latest drivers.
    Notepad++ version: 5.3.1

(Sorry for the dense title, forced by the forum's 45-char limit)

I am NOT AFFECTED despite running Windows XP Pro SP3, Notepad+++ v5.3.1 (UNICODE - but all my files have "NPPP > Format > Encode in ANSI"), and having installed (but never used) NppExec ver. 0.3 RC1 Unicode for NPPP5.1+.

I mean, the Title Bar in my Notepad++ window always has the entire full path of the file in the selected tab (e.g. "C:\TEMP\Test_NPPP-Save.htm - Notepad++"), preceded with an asterisk if the file has unsaved changes ("*C:\TEMP\Test_NPPP-Save.htm - Notepad++").

      Hi rrobe,
have you found a solution to this problem? I have the same issue ...

      thanks

Is has been a while, for some time I simply tried to deal with the problem, blaming my Windows XP installation or configuration.
Updating N++ up to 5.4.4 didn't solve anything, even a clean XP install.
To the symptoms described originally I can confirm that an "error sound" is played when closing N++ and the one-char-title-bar is displayed.

As dv__ suggested I tried disabling the plugins one by one, and found the bad guy:

        NppExec.dll

It's a plugin that I never used (I didn't even know it existed, actually)
It remains a mistery for me why this DLL has anything to do with the title bar when I simply choose to open a random file. I mean: do creating empty documents and switching the tabs have anything to do with "executing a script"?
Dunno. For now I'm fairly happy with this plugin disabled.

Just wanted you to know that NppExec.dll is the apparent cause to the reported problem.

What is your Notepad++ mode (Unicode or ANSI)?
What's the language of your XP?

Is there anyone else  has the same problem?

          Don

I'm almost sure it is caused by some of plugins you use. Try to find out which plugin causes this.

Was this the current version of NNppPlugin (v0.3.1)? If so, contact the author on the Plugin Development forum.

Can not reproduce it neither with Unicode version nor with ANSI version under Windows XP SP2/SP3. Also could not reproduce it under Windows 98 in Virtual PC.

My post of Fri 17 Jul 2009 12:16 GMT was titled:
    "**XPPro, NPPP5.3.1UNAN, NppEx0.3RC1Unic5.1+, OK**"

Unfortunately the forum overhaul was probably done by one of those Fast Posters who never understood what are "Thread Subject", "Message Title", threading, indexation, and who thus find "normal" that all messages in a thread have the same title (the ridiculous "*Re: …*") - whence their (very damageable) removal of this "ridiculously useless" (*when used their way*) title.

BTW this overhaul moved all threads - another attempt at information efficiency. The old link (label + URL) for this thread was (https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=331754&thread_id=3273233 "Name of the thread").
